Repetitive Stress Injury" is a group of injuries that can occur when a joint has too much stress placed upon it. R.S.I. usually occurs when the same motion is done repeatedly, thus creating an inflammation in the muscles and tendons. When you repeat an action that's stressful to your joints without allowing a time for it to rest and recuperate, such as typing or playing guitar it can become irritated and painfully swollen. Unfortunately many jobs require repetitive actions such as typing or even clicking a mouse! As a result R.S.I. is becoming much too common.
"Carpal Tunnel Syndrome," is a painful condition in the R.S.I. category, but more in depth. It’s when nerves become pinched inside the narrow tunnel of ligaments and bones. Causing shooting pains and the inability to hold things. Though, it isn’t like that all the time the condition is rather unpredictable. Sometimes the afflicted are will be fine, but other times; at times very suddenly it will act up. Causing the usual hassle and discomfort.
Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome vary but they all have one thing in common: the tendons and ligaments become enlarged, normaly from inflammation after aggravation. The best thing you can do if you’re worried about carpal tunnel syndrome. Is quite simply don’t get it. Don’t type for six hours on end, it’s recommended that you get up and stretch every half and hour. If your going to play a sport or an instrument or type make sure you’re doing it correctly. That’s half the battle right there.
Treating carpal tunnel syndrome is a very different thing, indeed while possible, it requires immobilizing the wrist to relieve the pressure placed upon the nerves. If a splint fails, the next step of treatment is a shot of cortisone to reduce swelling, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Next, as a last resort there is a surgery possible. However that doesn’t cure the problem, just makes it better.
Basically R.P.I. is a condition that encompasses a variety of ailments that affect multiple areas of the body. All that needs to be done to avoid a repetitive stress injury is do repetitive actions with rest and make sure you’re doing those actions correctly
